safc top 100…
best of the best

All of us know that Sunderland AFC is a big club. However, what many fans are not aware of is why. Sure, a full to capacity 48,000 stadium is part of it, but there is more to it than that. When the club is referred to as a sleeping giant it is because it was once justifiably regarded as a giant of the English game.

In honour of the players who have both made and kept the club great throughout its history, we present to you the top 100 SAFC achievers. This is not necessarily a list of the club's 100 greatest players, although most of them will feature, because the debate is simply too wide. No, this is a simple points-based assessment of cold, hard statistics, examining how each player helped the club to trophies and league finishes.

Admittedly, some players have scored well because they were in a good team that they were not an essential part of. Similarly, a few widely regarded class players have not made the top 100 because they played for too short a time or in relatively average seasons of achievement by their team.

We hope you enjoy it and that it provokes many a heated debate between fellow Mackems over a pint, or seven, while having a bet on the football!
